I Clannad, il cui nome in gaelico deriva da an clann as Dobhar, ossia “la famiglia originaria di Dore”, più che un gruppo musicale, sono una stirpe di musicisti appartenenti alle famiglie Brennan e Duggan, originarie del villaggio di Gweedore nella contea di Donegal, in Irlanda.

Il percorso musicale dei Clannad inizia nel 1970 quando alcuni membri del clan irlandese Brennan, Maire, Ciaran e Pol incominciarono a suonare nella taverna acquistata dai loro genitori insieme a due loro zii, Padraig e Noel Duggan.
Ben presto il gruppo familiare ha l’occasione di farsi conoscere e apprezzare dai clienti del locale, proponendo un repertorio che spazia dal folk tradizionale irlandese, a Beatles, Donovan, Joni Mitchell, e altri classici tutti rigorosamente riproposti in lingua gaelica.
Nel 1973 esce il loro primo album intitolato semplicemente Clannad, che però non riscuote un grosso successo di pubblico, sia perché suona come un lavoro un po’ troppo genuino, sia per il genere - il folk irlandese - che all’epoca non è molto conosciuto al di fuori dei confini dell’isola. La quasi totalità dei brani, infatti, è cantata in gaelico, e, da un punto di vista musicale, vi è una netta predominanza dell’uso di stumenti tradizionali, quali l’arpa celtica, il mandolino, l’armonica, il flauto e il tin whistles o zufolo di latta, strumento al quale solo gli irlandesi riescono a dare un’intonazione particolare e il cui utilizzo richiede una particolare abilità.
Un netto passo avanti venne compiuto dal gruppo nel 1974 con l’uscita del secondo album Clannad 2, un lavoro in cui spicca la nitidezza della voce di Maire Brennan, magistralmente assecondata dal lavoro strumentale e di produzione di Donal Lunny.
A questo punto i membri dei Clannad capiscono che gravitando soltanto entro i confini irlandesi, sarebbero rimasti semisconosciuti al grande pubblico e così tentano la sorte: nel 1975 giocano la carta del tour fuori dalla loro patria. Vanno a suonare in Germania e la risposta del pubblico è estremamente positiva. Finalmente i Clannad sbarcano in Europa.

Nel 1979 al gruppo si unisce la sorella della vocalist Maire, Eitne, meglio conosciuta con il nome d’arte Enya. L’ingresso di questo nuovo elemento di spicco e di particolare talento contribuisce in modo particolare alla realizzazione di numerose colonne sonore e alla pubblicazione degli album Cran Ull (con la bella “The Last Rose of Summer”) e Fuaim, nei quali la stessa Enya suona le tastiere.
Da questo momento in poi l’ascesa della notorietà e del successo dei Clannad è costante: nel 1984 la band pubblica Legend, la colonna sonora del film “Robin Of Sherwood” (Robin Hood), nel 1985 esce Macalla, l’album della consacrazione internazionale, che segna una svolta nella musica del gruppo, avvicinandosi al pop britannico e all’utilizzo di strumenti meno tradizionali, senza però tralasciare l’impostazione folk che l’ha sempre contraddistinto. Il disco vanta anche la collaborazione tra i Clannad e Bono, leader degli U2, che si concretizza con lo struggente duetto tra Maire Brennan e Bono nel singolo “In A Lifetime”. Tradotto anche in uno splendido videoclip, il brano riscuote un enorme successo internazionale, diventando in breve uno dei classici dell’intera produzione del gruppo.
Il punto di forza del gruppo del Donegal è stato quello di essere riuscito nell’intento di amalgamare la musica irlandese più tradizionale con varie contaminazioni che vanno dal jazz al rock, fino ad arrivare al pop di largo consumo degli ultimi album. Nelle sue delicate composizioni, la band irlandese ha saputo raccontare con grande dolcezza l’epopea dei miti celtici, mettendo in risalto l’aspetto mistico e poetico, senza però tralasciarne il lato più bellicoso.
I Clannad, dunque, possono essere considerati a pieno titolo gli ambasciatori nel mondo della musica tradizionale celtica, un genere che hanno saputo resuscitare e reinterpretare in chiave moderna con grande fantasia e originalità.

The musical journey of Clannad began in 1970 when some members of the Irish clan Brennan, Maire, Pol and Ciaran began to play in the tavern purchased by their parents together with two of their uncles, Padraig and Noel Duggan.

Soon the family group had the opportunity to become known and appreciated by the customers of the restaurant, offering a repertoire that ranges from traditional Irish folk to the Beatles, Donovan, Joni Mitchell and other classics rigorously replicated in Gaelic language.
In 1973 they released their first album simply titled Clannad, but didn’t gain a huge success, both because it sounds like a job a little ‘too genuine, and for the genre - Irish folk - that at that time was not much known outside the island borders. Almost all of the songs, in fact, were sung in Gaelic, and, from a musical point of view, there is a clear predominance of the use of traditional instruments such as Celtic harp, mandolin, harmonica, flute and the tin whistle, an instrument which only the Irish can give particular intonation and the use of which requires special skills.
A clear step forward was made in 1974 with the release of the second album “Clannad 2”, a work in which stands out the sharpness of the voice of Maire Brennan, masterly supported by the instrumental work and production of Donal Lunny.
At this point the members of Clannad understood that ,gravitating only within the Irish borders, they would have remained semi-unknown to the general public and so took their chances: in 1975 they played the card of the tour outside of their homeland. They performed in Germany and the public response was very positive. Clannad finally landed in Europe.
In 1979 the sister of vocalist Maire Eitne, better known by her stage name Enya, joined the group. The entrance of this new element of special talent contributes to the realization of numerous soundtracks and to the publication of the albums Cran Ull (with the beautiful “The Last Rose of Summer”) and Fuaim, where Enya herself plays keyboards.

From that moment the rise of the fame and success of Clannad is constant: in 1984 the band released Legend, the soundtrack of the movie “Robin Of Sherwood” (Robin Hood), in 1985 released Macalla, the album of the consecration international , which marks a turning point in the band’s music, approaching to British pop and using less traditional means, without forgetting the folk setting that has always distinguished their style. The album also features the collaboration between Clannad and U2, that concretise with the poignant duet between Maire Brennan and Bono in the single “In A Lifetime”. Translated also into a beautiful video, the song gained a huge international success, quickly becoming a classic of the entire band production.
The strength of the band of Donegal was to be able of blending traditional Irish music with various contaminations ranging from jazz to rock, to the pop of the last albums. In its beautiful compositions, the Irish band has managed to tell with great sweetness the epic of Celtic myths, highlighting the mystical and poetic side without leaving out the belligerent one.
The Clannad, therefore, can be considered as the ambassadors of traditional Celtic music in the world, a genre whom were able to revive and reinterpret in a modern way with imagination and originality.
